All my artworks are made en plain air, under the open sky. Since 2010, when me and my family moved to a small house in the forest on the outskirts of Oslo, I moved my artistic practice outdoors. Being quiet an urban person to begin with, living so close to the forest made a stirring impression on me. Painting and drawing outside was a way to explore and process my new surroundings. And besides, there were no artist studios to rent nearby.
As the first winter approached and temperature dropped below zero, my ink froze on the paper leaving frosty marks whilst I was painting. This is simple physics, but at the time it felt like a revelation. The traces of nature in my artwork, showing itself in a different image, rather than a depicted landscape. Thus began my journey to explore the impact of the forest in its shifting seasons in my artwork. I became interested in deep ecology principles. Frost, snow, rain, shadows cast from the sun, the whirling waters in the river, forest slugs and microorganisms have made marks on my works at some point during these years.
I work a lot from direct observation, responding to what I see. Sometimes like a careful description, other times like an abstracted image. Sometimes I travel to special sites to paint and draw, but mostly I work in the forest where I live. Here I am showing some selected artworks and photos from the working process trough the seasons.
